Brand Uruguay: perception study

Introduction

In the competitive global scenario, a country’s brand perception plays a crucial role in its positioning and success in various areas, from tourism to investment attraction and migration. In this context, the study on the perception of Uruguay’s image abroad conducted in 2017 offers a revealing window on how the country is perceived internationally. This article analyzes the key findings of this study and its impact on the Uruguay brand.

Background

In the previous study conducted in 2009-2010, Uruguay was largely unknown outside its region, with limited presence beyond the Mercosur and South American continent. Theresa Rice of Out Loud Communications Consultant, who also conducted the first country image audit, led this comparative analysis.

Study Methodology

The image perception study was based on several methodologies, including international media analysis, interviews with international stakeholders, ranking studies, digital analysis and review of promotional materials of the country.

Study Results

The results show a significant change in the international perception of Uruguay. There is greater media coverage of the country, highlighting issues such as the legalization of cannabis, tourism and emblematic products such as meat and wine. Uruguay is also recognized as a leader in areas such as health and renewable energy.

However, a gap is identified between Uruguay’s positioning within and outside the region. Although progress has been made in areas such as tourism, the country still faces challenges to be included in travel packages of major travel agencies and luxury tourism awards.

Impact and Conclusions

The flow of information from Uruguay abroad has improved significantly, with consulates and embassies playing a crucial role in the dissemination of relevant content in foreign languages. The perceptions of foreign opinion leaders highlight the accessibility of high-level officials and businessmen as a competitive advantage for Uruguay.

Despite the challenges, Uruguay has excelled in global rankings in areas such as transparency, quality of life and Internet penetration. However, it still faces obstacles in terms of bureaucracy and business confidence.
